Books are considered a valuable cultural asset in South Korea, their cover prices and the importance of printing are proof of this. According to the Korean Publishers Association, in 2022, more than 115 million books were sold nationwide.

Foreign rights play an important role in South Korean publishing: 17% of the titles published are translated works, and Korea is among the top ten countries worldwide acquiring rights, the second in the region after China. Korean publishers were the first in the region to take an interest in foreign publications in the early 2000s and have become important partners for French publishers.
